Why a Bridge?
A dental bridge is a device used to fill the space where a tooth has fallen out or been removed. Gaps between teeth can cause chewing problems. If even one tooth is missing, other teeth may slowly shift out of place. This changes the way your teeth fit together. A poor bite may make your jaw sore. Your teeth may become harder to clean which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
It is important to fill gaps between teeth and a bridge is one way to accomplish that. A typical bridge consists of a filler tooth that is attached to two surrounding crowns. Once complete, this bridge structure is bonded into the mouth.
Dentures, bridges or Implants?
For some patients, fixed bridges or removable dentures are not the perfect solution to missing teeth and often bring with them a number of other problems.
Fixed bridges require the cutting down of adjacent healthy teeth, and removable dentures may lead to bone loss in the area where the tooth or teeth are missing. Recurrent decay, periodontal (gum) disease and other factors often doom fixed bridgework to early failure. For these reasons, fixed bridges and removable dentures usually need to be replaced every seven to 15 years, compared to an up to 25-year life span for dental implants.
Dr. Barotz has extensive advanced training in dental implants, and has been doing the procedure for over 20 years. He also uses dental implants when creating Drop Dead Gorgeous implant-supported dentures. For more information about dental implants, click here.
Or, to discuss all your options, come in for a complimentary restorative consultation and let Dr. Barotz examine your mouth and determine if a bridge, denture or dental implant is the right option for you.
