Teeth Whitening

Dr. Charles Barotz has been providing advanced dental services to Colorado patients for more than 30 years.

Denver, Colorado dentist Dr. Charles Barotz has been a leader in cosmetic dentistry for more than 30 years. He has helped thousands of patients to get a whiter, brighter smile. By studying and testing the various methods available, Dr. Barotz makes sure that Barotz Dental offers only those methods of teeth whitening that will provide you with the best results.

Tooth discoloration can be caused by many factors, including genetics, aging, staining (e.g., tobacco, coffee, tea, soft drinks), and chemicals (e.g., tetracycline). Professional dental cleanings and the regular use of whitening toothpaste can usually remove tooth stains on the outside of the teeth (extrinsic staining). Deeper stains, including the yellow teeth take on as we age (intrinsic staining) require specialized treatment by Dr. Barotz or Dr. Zeitlin. This procedure is called “tooth bleaching”.

Teeth whitening by Dr. BarotzTypes of tooth bleaching

Dr. Barotz offers the three types of tooth bleaching. Click on a link to read more about each type.

  • Power Bleaching is performed in the dentist’s office and gives you immediate results.

  • Gradual Bleaching is a take-home, self-administered treatment that produces results slowly over time.

  • Extreme Whitening! is a synergestic combination of the Power Whitening and Gradual Whitening to get you a Celebrity Brite White smile.

Why professional tooth whitening?

Dr. Barotz recommends dentist-provided, professionally administered tooth bleaching to whiten your teeth and brightening your smile. Our professionally supervised teeth whitening means that you will get the best results in the least amount of time, without unpleasant side effects or problems.

Store-bought bleaching systems are not as effective as professional, dentist-provided systems. In addition, studies show that they can create other difficulties

  • They can cause painful sensitivity to untreated dental disease.

  • The active chemicals in store-bought systems are not as strong as those you can get from your dentist. They may eventually lighten your teeth, but not as bright as a dentist-provided system, and it will take much longer to do even that.

  • Without custom trays, the likelihood of severe gum irritation is dramatically increased.

  • Poor fitting strips can lead to ingesting the active chemicals, resulting in upset stomach, nausea, and even vomiting.

  • With store-bought bleaching systems it is possible to over-bleach teeth, causing damage to the enamel.

Dentist-provided systems are backed by scientific studies that prove their safety and effectiveness when administered by a highly skilled professional like those at Barotz Dental.

How tooth bleaching works

Bleaching gels usually contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When applied to human teeth, peroxide molecules go into the tiny pores of the enamel and dentin. They break down into oxygen molecules and break up the stains that block out the light. Then, more and more light passes through the teeth and they appear lighter.

Yellow to slightly brown intrinsic stains that accumulate over time respond best to bleaching. Intrinsic stains that are dark brown to blue-gray are the most difficult to bleach because the stain is so deeply embedded into the tooth.

Bleaching worked very well for this patient:

Power Bleaching can only be performed in a dentist’s office. A hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching solution is applied to the teeth and activated by a high intensity light or laser that causes the solution to release oxygen molecules. Treatments for both power and laser bleaching usually last somewhere between six to twelve months.

Gradual Bleaching

Gradual Bleaching is a take-home treatment administered under the supervision of a dentist. Impressions of the patient’s teeth are made and custom-fitting clear trays are created to protect the rest of the mouth from contact with the bleaching chemicals. The active chemicals used are not as strong as those used in Power Bleaching, and provide a more gradual lightening of the teeth. Gradual Bleaching takes 1 hour per day for 2-3 weeks to achieve maximum results, and often requires follow-up checks by your dentist.

Extreme Bleaching

Dr. Barotz will work with you to make sure that your treatment plan will give you a beautiful, healthy smile

Dr. Zeitlin will make sure that your teeth whitening is comfortable and effective, whichever treatment you choose.

Rembrandt, the original leader in tooth whitening technology, invented the Sapphire Crystal system of Extreme Bleaching.

Sapphire Crystal bleaching has been shown to be most effective when combined with an at-home tray bleaching technique. This Extreme Bleaching technique combines several methods and is thought to be the most effective teeth whitening technique known today. Extreme Bleaching appears to get teeth significantly whiter than ever possible before. Patients who previously were unable to receive the results they would have liked (because of “bleach resistant teeth”) can now get their teeth significantly whiter.

The first session of Extreme Bleaching will start with a power bleaching in our office, which will “condition” the teeth to absorb oxygen more readily from the bleaching gel in your at-home bleaching trays. You then wear at-home trays for 14 consecutive nights. After the 14th night of at-home bleaching, the final Extreme Bleaching will be performed in our office, and will provide significant additional whitening over what will have already been accomplished. The results will shock you!

White teethExcellent results

Power Bleaching, Extreme Bleaching, and Gradual Bleaching all provide whitening results as much as 12 – 15 shades lighter than the original tooth color. Results vary depending on the condition of the individual patient’s teeth. Patients should avoid all tooth-staining foods and tobacco for 1-2 days after Power and Extreme Bleaching. Gradual Bleaching patients should do the same both during treatment and for up to 2 weeks after treatment.

Tooth bleaching lasts an average of 6-12 months depending on diet and tobacco habits.
