Sleep Apnea: A New Frontier for Barotz Dental

Barotz Dental | May 19, 2015

As a leading dentist in Colorado for over thirty years, Dr. Barotz has always done his best to continue expanding his education. He has immersed himself in the science of sleep apnea, and how he can help patients who have this problem.

According to the American Institute of Health, currently 12 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. However, that number is expected to be much higher as many Americans do not report their condition or know that they have it. In addition, this condition increases with obesity.

Sleep apnea is a disorder that is characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. The common affects of sleep apnea are daytime fatigue, a slower reaction time, and vision problems. Due to the disruption of daytime cognition, behavioral side effects also occur such as moodiness, and a decrease in attentiveness and drive. More serious medical problems include high blood pressure, irregular heart beats, and even death. This condition can often be treated with a device worn in your mouth while you sleep which must be fabricated by a dentist, and only after appropriate testing.

Dr. Barotz believes in constantly improving his knowledge and skills in dentistry in order to best serve his patients. So we will be screening every patient in our practice for a predisposition to this condition at no charge. We are eager to help people with sleep apnea lead a more normal life, and sleep more comfortably.
