PRF Advanced Wound Healing and Facial Aesthetics with Microneedling

At Barotz Dental, we continuously integrate the latest technology into our practice. Dr. Stark, our team, and I recently attended conferences focused on Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) in dentistry.

PRF significantly enhances post-operative healing, and after several months of use, we have been very impressed with the results. This 100% natural process uses healing factors from your own blood to accelerate recovery after extractions and surgeries. Many people are familiar with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for tissue regeneration, but PRF is six times more effective. A small blood sample is drawn, spun in a centrifuge, and separated to extract PRF for various applications.

An additional benefit of PRF is its use in facial rejuvenation through microneedling. While many medical spas offer PRP, PRF provides bioactive effects for 18 to 21 days, compared to PRP’s 4 to 6 minutes. I personally tried the treatment and noticed a visible reduction in wrinkles.

Dr. Stark will lead this new service, making it possible to have your teeth cleaned and your skin rejuvenated during the same visit. The treatment consists of three sessions, spaced one month apart. Plastic surgeons typically charge $700 per session or $2,000 for a package of three—often using PRP. As an introductory offer, we are providing PRF microneedling for the first 20 patients at $1,000 for three treatments or $400 per session, available through the end of May.

In addition, PRF can be used as a natural facial filler to stimulate collagen production. Dr. Stark is currently training in these procedures, which we will be offering soon.

We are excited about the benefits PRF provides for improved surgical healing and even more excited to introduce this innovative service to our patients.

How Smoking Affects Your Oral Health & Why You Should Kick the Habit

Smoking doesn’t just harm your body—it also takes a serious toll on your smile and your oral health. From stained teeth to gum disease and even tooth loss and healing, the effects are significant. The good news? Quitting can help restore your oral health. Here’s how smoking impacts your mouth and why it’s worth kicking the habit.

Stained Teeth and Bad Breath

The tar and nicotine in cigarettes stick to teeth, causing yellow and brown stains that dull your smile. Smoking also leads to chronic bad breath due to harmful bacteria and chemicals in the mouth.

Higher Risk of Gum Disease

Smoking weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight gum infections. Smokers are twice as likely to develop gum disease, which can progress to bone loss and tooth loss if left untreated.

Delayed Healing for Implants and Increased Tooth Loss

Nicotine reduces blood flow, which slows healing after dental treatments such as implants or extractions. Dental implants, in particular, have a much lower success rate in smokers. Over time, smoking damages the gums and weakens the jawbone, increasing the risk of tooth loss.

Oral Cancer Risk

Smoking significantly increases the risk of oral cancer, affecting the mouth, throat, and tongue. Our doctors routinely check for abnormalities at every continuing care appointment using an advanced diagnostic tool that allows them to detect concerns not always visible to the naked eye, even with magnification.

So, Why Quit?

The benefits of quitting are clear:

  • Brighter, stain-free teeth

  • Fresher breath

  • Lower risk of gum disease and tooth loss

  • Faster healing after dental treatments

  • Reduced risk of oral cancer

At Barotz Dental, we are here to support you on your journey to a healthier, smoke-free smile.

The Benefits of Fluoride Treatments for Your Teeth

Fluoride treatments are a simple and very effective way to protect your teeth from cavities. This natural mineral helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugars in the mouth. Even if you brush and floss regularly, fluoride adds an extra layer of defense, particularly for those prone to tooth decay.

In-office fluoride treatments, such as those recommended by our doctors and our hygienist at your routine care appointments, provide a higher concentration of fluoride than found in overthe-counter toothpaste, offering enhanced protection. People with dry mouths or a history of frequent cavities can benefit significantly.

The process is quick, painless, and affordable, with long-lasting results. Regular fluoride treatments, combined with good oral hygiene, help maintain a strong, healthy smile and prevent the need for more extensive dental work in the future.

Say ‘YES’ to fluoride on your next hygiene visit!

Important Study - Gum Disease Disrupts Brain Activity

Recent research has uncovered a significant link between gum disease, known as periodontitis, and brain health. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that individuals with moderate-to-severe gum disease exhibited altered brain connections, even when their cognitive abilities appeared normal. This suggests that gum disease may impair brain function and potentially increase the risk of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease.

For the study, researchers studied the oral health and brain activity of 51 people, including 11 with healthy gums, 14 with mild gum disease, and 26 with moderate-to-severe gum disease. The people with moderateto-severe gum disease displayed changes in connections between and within different brain regions, researchers said. Overall, gum disease was associated with impairment of network function within the brain. Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream, reach the brain which can trigger inflammation and immune responses. This can lead to the accumulation of harmful plaques associated with Alzheimer’s.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential not only for dental health but also for preserving brain function. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can help prevent gum disease and its potential impact on cognitive health. Excerpts from ©HealthDay

Robin Barotz’s Carrot Dill Soup

Robin Barotz’s Carrot Dill Soup

4 tablespoons butter (½ stick)

1 large onion, cut into chunks

2½ pounds baby carrots

2 celery ribs, cut into chunks

8 cups chicken stock

¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Pinch of cayenne pepper

Garnish (Optional)

6 teaspoons crème fraîche

¼ cup finely diced red bell pepper

6 dill sprigs

Melt the butter in a soup kettle. Add the onion and cook over low heat until wilted, about 10 minutes.

Add the carrots, celery, chicken stock, ¼ cup of the dill, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and cover. Simmer until the carrots are tender, about 40 minutes. Allow the soup to cool slightly.

Purée the soup in batches using a blender or food processor. Return the soup to the kettle, stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of dill, and adjust the seasonings as needed. Heat through.

Serve each bowl garnished with a dollop of crème fraîche, a sprinkling of red bell pepper, and a sprig of dill. For an extra kick, add more cayenne pepper. Dr. B also enjoys a light sprinkle of ginger in his soup.

Patient Feedback

I have been a patient of Barotz Dental for more than 35 years. Throughout that time Dr. Barotz and his wonderful staff have given me expert advice and cutting-edge dental care such that my teeth and gums are in excellent condition, especially for someone my age at 82 years. Most recently, I received an appointment within a day to assess an anomaly in one of my front teeth. Immediate care eliminated the anomaly, thus keeping it from being a future problem. I am thankful for the excellent care that I receive from the nice people at Barotz Dental. — Don P
